System requirements
for the use of KIX

KIX comes with its own operating environment and database, making the installation process very simple using preconfigured Docker containers.

This makes it easier to use the software on different operating systems.

Compatibilities for KIX

It is important for the host environment that a compatible version of Docker is available and executable. Before installing KIX, it is recommended to check if the planned host environment supports the use of Docker. Docker and Docker-Compose are required - both in the latest version (if not already included in the respective Docker installation).

  • Learn more at docker.com
  • Installation instructions for later installation of KIX Docker containers at github.com
  • Information can also be found in the KIX Forum.

We recommend operating environments based on the AMD64 architecture and Linux operating systems for which the appropriate Docker runtimes are available. KIX should also be installed on Debian and Ubuntu LTS host environments. Use on MacOS or Windows is possible for testing purposes, but is not explicitly supported.

Detailed installation instructions and tips for initial setup of KIX can be found in our online documentation.

Hats off, KIX is really easy to install. Even larger providers can take a leaf out of this book. It's a pleasure for the admin.

You want to migrate from OTRS to KIX? No problem!

The migration is designed in a way that it can be repeated as often as you want without any data loss.

Among other things, the database of the source system is exported, imported into the new system and adjusted accordingly. This requires enough space in the file system: First, in the directory specified as the destination directory for temporary files during migration, and second, on the disk where the database will be re-imported. Please make sure that there is enough space in each file system. Otherwise, the migration will fail.

The procedure described here cannot be transferred 1:1 to KIX Pro, because additional components are installed compared to KIX.

Migration from ((OTRS)) Community Edition to KIX

It is very easy to migrate from the classic ((OTRS)) Community Edition to the KIX Service Management System. As a prerequisite it is important that

  • the ((OTRS)) Community Edition system is running on ((OTRS)) Community Edition version 5.
  • The ((OTRS)) Community Edition system uses the same database management system as KIX.
  • The following packages must be installed on the ((OTRS)) Community Edition system:
    • FAQ
    • General Catalog
    • ImportExport
    • ITSM Core
    • ITSM Configuration Management
    • ITSMIncidentProblemManagement

There are only a few steps left to do as an administrator. The migration itself is done automatically by a migration script (/opt/kix/scripts/migrate_otrs2kix.sh). The exact description of the migration steps and the procedure can be found in the file /opt/kix/MIGRATING_OTRS.md after the installation of KIX. Just follow the instructions.
