It never gets boring for KIX
Between software development, company structure and KIXCONF
The year is running at full speed. A new version of KIX with many improvements has been released recently, the KIXCONF user conference is being prepared internally and the partner network is being expanded. In this interview, CEO Rico Barth looks back on the past year, highlights current challenges and talks about what he is looking forward to in 2024.
Interview with CEO Rico Barth
One construction site in 2023 was and is the migration from KIX 17 to version 18 - existing customers had to be convinced and there were some discussions. As CEO of KIX: How do you look back on 2023?
Last year was also a challenging but successful year for us as a result of the macroeconomic problems in Europe.
The digitization and simplification of service processes and the resulting benefits for enterprises and public organizations enabled us to achieve double-digit growth.
We also made significant progress with KIX, the leading open source service management software: Many of our existing customers upgraded to the new product generation.
As a result, our consulting and support teams have been and continue to be busy reconciling customer needs with KIX requirements.
That sounds like a Herculean task.
Yes, indeed. And yes, we have not yet been able to satisfy every feature request, and that makes no sense. We always have to balance what makes sense for the majority of our customers and what is in line with our product planning and strategy.
It should be noted that the new KIX product generation is not an upgrade - it is a completely new product based on new technology. Despite all the challenges, there has been a lot of positive customer feedback.
Our thanks go to our many customers who have placed their trust in KIX and our product development and support capabilities.
Is there anything that is currently very relevant for KIX?
In addition to everyday issues, open source and its political implications have an impact on us as software vendors. One example is the Cyber Resilience Act, which is currently causing quite a stir in the offices of the EU.
But also when it comes to fundamental questions of responsibility with open source or increased requirements in terms of cyber security due to the recently ratified NIS2 directive - all of this requires appropriate standards, which in turn are applied by KIX and in addition to security also increase trust when using KIX. This is especially true for the public sector and critical infrastructures. Under the auspices of the OSB Alliance, we are working with other companies to make progress in this area.
And what happened internally at KIX?
Last year we took a close look at our corporate structure. After the leaden coronavirus years, we realized that we could not remain with the status quo. Accordingly, we are working on establishing an integrated matrix structure: The main goal is to clarify the processes between the individual departments and how they work together.
The goal is to increase collaboration and make better use of cross-functional skills. Ultimately, we want to find answers to the following question How do we want to work at KIX? How do we want to work together? In internal workshops we create the space for everyone, from working student to CEO, to develop the company together and ultimately deliver the best product and the best service to the customer.
With April just around the corner and 2024 in full swing, what are your plans?
For one thing, we have the migration of existing customers at the top of our to-do list. To this end, we are working on adding important functions that will certainly make the sometimes complex system changes easier for our customers.
Internally, the ITILĀ® 4 recertification for KIX is also on the agenda. KIX is and will remain the leading certified open source service management software that allows service organizations to work ITIL-compliant - and at an attractive price. Apart from that, we are of course holding intensive talks with highly interesting potential customers, continuing to expand our partner network and visiting a large number of trade fairs in the DACH region. Let me put it this way: KIX won't be boring in 2024.
In conclusion: What are you most looking forward to as CEO of KIX?
I'm really looking forward to our user conference "KIXCONF" here in Chemnitz. We are already working hard behind the scenes, and on June 12th it will finally be time: two packed days, exclusive user stories, interesting workshops - more than 100 IT experts from industry and the public sector will be our guests in Chemnitz! It's great to be in contact with our KIX users, to experience their enthusiasm for our product, but also to receive constructive criticism, new ideas and inspiring impulses.
