Cyber Resilience Act embraces open source features
A few months ago, there was talk that the EU would introduce new software regulations that would take away some of the benefits of open source. A terrible idea that would have had a significant impact on the entire European ecosystem. (see article from 07/28/2013)
Together with our industry associations OSB Alliance and BITKOM, we have been working hard to correct these errors in the legal texts.
Erfolg für Open Source Ökosystem
At the end of last year, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union agreed on the final text of the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) in the last round of trilogue negotiations.
The Open Source Business Alliance (OSBA) had already expressed its concern in a statement that the regulatory initiative could lead to overregulation and legal uncertainty due to vagueness in the text and thus cause great damage to the German and European open source ecosystem.
However, the final text takes into account the specificities of the open source sector and has allayed these concerns by being more precise.

Major milestone achieved
"As an active part of the Open Source Business Alliance, we welcome the outcome of the trilogue negotiations. It has been shown time and again how important the involvement of industry associations is in political work at the federal and EU levels.
The OSBA wants to put the concrete, very practical effects of the CRA on the agenda for software vendors in a working group in 2024 and promote the exchange of experiences.
We ourselves also have to consider the requirements resulting from the CRA for our KIX development."
